My daughter has started a 40 gal breeder tank for a starter with saltwater fish.
The tank has been cycling for about a month.
She has alot of long red string algae growing with the green.
What is a good way to get rid of the red hair line algae.
She has a good filter and protein skimmer with two powerheads.
She has a pair of o. clownfish and damsel.
She has added a few smaller snails and one hermit crab.
What is your suggestion.
Appreciate feedback.
Thanks
Judy

Do you have a pic? Are you sure its not cyano?
Decrease nutrients (feeding) and cut back light is the general cure for algae...

Thanks for your response.
What is cyano?
I was wondering if she only having a few snails and one hermit crab would effect the growth of the red algae!
Is it normal to have red string algae during the cycyling. She also have brown and some green. I know she is using spring water. All of her reading are fine.
I cannot send a photo yet since the tank is at my daughter's house.
Maybe this weekend. I would appreciate any more suggestions on the matter.
Thanks.

generally algae and cyano comes from excess nutrients and not enough flow.
no, i dont believe it is common to have algae during/after a cycle.
what do you mean by "spring" water? im guessing thats the root of the problem.
for now try feeding less, increase your flow (reposition your powerheads or get bigger) and cut back on lighting a bit.
