i have two red hairy hermits in my tank and everynight the one gets out of his shell and wonders around the tank but by morning he is back in his shell wondering around is this normal?

Agreed, he's just searching for a new shell. If you have a craft store like "Michaels" near you they have bags of shells that are $2 or less. Really inexpensive. Put various sizes of shells in their, I have 2 blue legged hermits that moved into huge shells, even though the hermits were small.

Thank you just answered one of my questions. My wife has some shells she bought from target for house decoration. I can add these to the tank for new homes.
