red lava rock

Can you use red lava rock in an aquarium? is it safe? the bag says thatit is ok for use in ponds and aquariums.

not generally used in salt tanks due to the minerals and such it leaches out, causing algae issues.

I would be more concerned about it leaching heavy metals than algae issues, the rock is red because it contains high amounts of iron which in large quantities is toxic to our aquariums.
