i just got both for my tank. the blue legs run $1 and the red are $5. the reds are bigger, they get along fine with each other and do not bother anything in the tank. just leave empty shells so if they want a new shell there wont be any fighting.

They are both reef safe. Blues are cheaper than reds. Blues are more likely to kill snails for their shells. Most people say to keep extra shells for your hermits but I have tons of extra shells and they still kill my snails. Blues do a better job cleaning though IMO. My reds hide most of the time when the lights are on.

I have or should I say HAD 10 of each. But when I added the 10 red leg ones they started fighting with my blue ones and killed 4 of them. Only 1 red one was killed. I paid $0.99 for the blue ones and $3.99 for the red ones.

.....80 is probably a little over kill for a 55. check it out
. all good info, thanks people. does anyone know why the red legs are more expensive than the blues? do they live longer , under the right conditions? or are they just harder to find? do they do a better job cleaning? whats the scoop on that?
and should i only get one or the other if their going to be killing each other off?

I've kept both since getting my first cleaner package about 5 years ago....never a serious problem with either...and I think they can be a very positive addition.
But....I do have a problem with reference to sites/sources for hobby related items which is a violation of this sites policy. Please refrain from posting information about such sources. We all know they are out there and we all know they exist....and we all should know that reference to or discussion of or linking to such sites is not allowed here.

I am fed up with all of my hermits. They kill snails they kill each other and they crawl all over my mushrooms. They do not hurt the mushrooms, but it just bugs me to no end that they are always crawling around on them. i have the blue-legged, scarlet, and one with white legs that hitch-hiked its way into my tank. The blues are out and about all the time. The scarlets stay hidden under rocks if they are not on top of my mushrooms and the white legged hitch-hiker is always, i mean alwys on top of a mushroom or two. He came of once to get in a new shell. I am always telling myself to take them to the lfs.

The scarlets cost more because some people think they are prettier than the blues. Increased demand = increased price. They are the same difference as far as I am concerned. My scarlets are more nocturnal than my blues alyssia said, so paying more for a crab (because of its looks) that you rarely see is silly!

None of my crabs has ever killed a snail for its shell. If you have too many crabs and not enough for them to eat they will eat the occasional snail. These things are living creatures and trying to make generalizations about them almost never works. Remember all hermits are omnivores, meaning they can, and will, eat anything if the mood strikes them. That said, I have never had a problem with any of my numerous hermits.

I deleted your vulgar response and will forward the content to admin.....there is no reason for such a foul response to any post on these forums....period.
There is however a well established policy that prohibits the mention of or reference to or discussion of other hobby related sites and/or sources of hobby related items. If you personally have a problem with that policy then move on....but spare us your foul mouthed responses.

I have a 20 gal., I should then get around two of each kind and 5 snails, wait a week or two and see how they are acting!
