Red slime algae questions

So i have had red slime algae for a while now, and was wondering how long it will take to get rid of it ALL (46 gallon bow front and all over sand and rock). I think it started because i bought this finger leather that died right of the bat and the guy at the lfs said to bring them back in a few days, so it sat deid in my tank for 4 days. And i was over feeding a little too.
I am currently not feeding as much, got new protien skimmer (because my old one didnt even work and i am a dummy and didnt send in the waranty) have my light on less and on a schedule because i had it on to long in the day, and I am doing more water changes, about 10 gallon water change every 2-3 weeks (is this not enough or too much?) Is there anything else i can do?
Thank you so much
O ya i have had my tank up and running for about 5 months(if that is important).

Cyano does not like good water flow ...make sure you have no dead spots from water flow in the system. Also, you should be using RO/DI water.
