how can I tell if my skimmer pump in my redsea 34gal tank isn't working? I have like a "film" on the top of my water. I changed out the carbon bag about a month ago.
Thanks for the help.

I had the same exact thing happen on my RSM (Red Sea Max) two days ago. I took my skimmer out and cleaned all the build-up out of the chambers. I also did a 5 gallon water change and laid paper towels on the surface of the water to soak up all the film. That tank is running clean as a whistle now. When I cleaned the skimmer and fired it back up, it started churning out gunk like nobody's business.
I've done a lot of research on the RSM and supposedly they have very temperamental skimmers. Personally, I do an overhaul on my RSM skimmer about once a month. Also, be sure that if you're going to clean the skimmer with tap water, give it a rinse in RO or saltwater so you don't have a chlorine contamination. Also, when you scrub the skimmer, don't use soap, and don't use normal household sponges either... they have chemicals in them that are toxic to fish... I just use a clean filter pad to scrub it with and use tap water... rinsing it with salt water after I'm done.
Lastly, expect some microbubbles when you first fire the skimmer back up... they will go away over time... sometimes as quickly as an hour after you restart it after cleaning.
Hey, if you have any other questions and want to ask a fellow RSM owner, feel free to PM me anytime.

Chloramines are not toxic in that concentration. I know it's the new buzzword but this stuff has been around absolutely forever. I just leak tested a tank with tapwater and then drained it to fill it will salt. I did not get all the tap water out...... there's no need to waste more water and resources to rerinse something that had be in tapwater.

Yeah that's what I've been hearing lately... a lot of people have told me in like the last week that tap water isn't all that bad... interesting.
But you would agree that soap and new sponges should not be used, right?

Most definately on the soap and kitchen sponges.
I test my RO/DI water weekly for chlorine/chloamines just to make sure my carbon filter isn't exhausted.... that won't be picked up on your TDS meter. I totally rinse my food in tap water that is loaded with chloramines here in LA and some of my fish are over 7 years old.

I'll give the cleaning of the skimmer a try. I have not cleaned it (skimmer) since the tank was set up in December.

I also just noticed one of my circulation pumps is working at like 2%. This will be the second one I replace. I tried to fax the redsea vendors in Houston but I guess they must have had some damage from Ike.

You may notice your water flow get a lot better when you clean the skimmer. Since it's the main thing the water goes though, it needs to be working really well in order for optimal flow throughout that back chamber. I've noticed my flow get a lot better with a clean-running skimmer. Also, when I changed out my carbon filter, the powerhead sucked up a part of the mesh bag and slowed to about 2%... I thought it was a bad pump but later found it was just clogged by the carbon bag. I tied it off and haven't had an issue since
