Reef Octopus question

Fired up the new protein skimmer today (extreme 200) and notice a couple "extra parts" that aren't described on the instructions. A yellow impeller looking thing and a ~3" x 3" black plastic mesh. Any idea what these are used for? Also, what is the general consensus on cutting down on micro bubbles in the tank...

I think the skimmer came with the option of 2 pin wheels for the pump depending if you wanted to run the needle wheel or the mesh modded wheel.
