Taggin along to see what answers you get. I don't believe any out there will not pick on your coral.

Pyramid Butterfly and Heni's
Those are really the only two that are guaranteed not to nip corals

Umm ok

If you know how they behave and or eat in the wild you can beat that that is how they are going to be in the aquarium, and sense you don't see any tank bred butterflys they all come from the ocean.

That can be said with any fish, and actually butterfly fish are able to change their eating habits, to what is readily available, whether it is coral or other small living organisms, such as parasites, mysis shimp, brine, etc... The trick to butterfly fish is getting them to eat anything in the home aquarium.

All of that could be in a tank so it really wouldn't be to much differce besides the kinds.

Thats what a few good friends have told me. I've been told every butterfly will nip at corals. I wouldnt take a chance in my reef but your right there are some beautiful ones out there but I just dont want to take the chance.

tangs rule

Several years ago I had a longnose butterfly (forcipiger longirostris) that did very well in my 90 reef - but the tank was well established and had a HUGE pod population......what was SO very cool was to watch him feed on the pods in the liverock crevices/holes. He seemed just as comfortable upside down or sideways while he nipped scuds all day......he'd do 360's while he scoured the liverock all day, and seemed very happy.....He totally ignored my lps/sps collection.
I have just purchased another one, and he is in Q tank till march 1, then he will go into that same 90, but it only has a few of the corals as the setup I had in 2004. There are a couple lps/sps in that tank now, as well as peppermint/skunk cleaner shrimp - and I have little worries that he'll bother anything but all the scuds living in/on liverock.
