I am pretty sure a choc chip starfish is bad. I keep serpent stars in my tank with no problems. Brittle stars (especially green) can be predators. Some people have success with them, some don't....like me. There are other starfish out there, but I have no experience with them, so someone else can chime it......

I hear that chocolate chip in a reef is bad. They will destory most anything in there.
My serpent star does quite well. They tend to hide but if the lights are off, they cruise around pretty good.. and they're excellent scavengers.

I also started out with a chocolate chip went I first started my reef several years ago and that little suckers ate anything and everything. For a $6 star he ate about $60 worth of stuff in about 2 days.
I have 2 small black serpent stars which have been in there for about 8 mo. and I also have a very large Green Brittle which is about 20" from tip to tip in a 55G reef and he has been there for about 4 years and has caused no harm other than to eat any small fish who may have died or been very ill (to the point where they couldn't swim) Tell you the truth that is more of a benifit than anything only becuase I never had to worry about a carcus hidden behind a rock causing an chemical spikes.
I also try to make sure I feed him a krill or two about twice a week with a feeder stick. Could be the reason he has gotten so big but boy they are AWESOME to see in action.
Good Luck!

If your tank is stable and large you could try a Linckia-- Personally i like the Linkcia multiflora, I havent seen them around much but they are small and reef safe- most of the Big and colorfull stars are usually not reef safe- Brittle stars are good as well but are not really a true starfish
