I started with a 29 and found it a good size tank to start the reef keeping experience.
Most say larger is better to start due to more stable water conditions but IMO any where form 29 - 55 is a good place to start or even end.
These size tanks are easier and less costly to stock and maintain.

I too have a 29 gal, about 1 month now, I got a Red Sea Prizem Skimmer for u to 100 gal tank, from http://www.petsolutions.com/ for about 75 with s/h. Is if for a much larger tank, but i have been getting everything with a 100 gal in mind, so i can one day upgrade.

Hi,
I think a 29 is just fine for a reef. I wish I would have had mine drilled, but oh well. It has been up for about 2 months or so, but the rock was from an older tank so the tank is farily mature for it age, and I have been given lots of frags from fellow reefers in the area :)
Here is a link to the pics, most of the newer pics are towards the end of the album

It's working out great. I used to have a cc bed, well when I made the switch over I was amazed at the crap that was under the cc bed. It was disgusting! Seeing that made me a believer in DSB that's for sure. Between that and my skimmer I never have a problem with trates!

A 29 would be ok, people say that in a small tank you have to watch your levels because they can flux faster. For your lighting it will depend what you want to keep in your tank, but everything I have read and heard is 5 watts per gal you won't have any problems. I had a prizm on my 29 reef when I first started worked real well, seaclone or cpr makes very good skimmers for smaller tanks. I would go with a dbs really makes the difference. Good Luck

My 20g is a semi-reef :) I have approx. 30-35lbs of LR & a 4" dsb. I am waiting for my PC lighting to show up on Monday or Tuesday ;) I change 2 gallons out every week......

I've had great results from my 29 gallon this time around. My attempt a few years ago was a failure. From my experience it very much depends on the type of water you use for top-offs/changes, water movement and the amounts of ls and lr. As far as lighting it depends on what you want. If you aren't plannning on sps and clams you won't need mh. Vho or pc's would do great for a smaller tank like yours. There are cheap retrofits on the net but shop around and find what's better for you. I believe you get what you pay for so beware some of the cheaper deals and brands. They may cause you to spend more money in the long run and lead to alot of deaths in your tank.
