A FOWLR is what (IMO), everybody should start off as. Moniter the water params, the temperature, all of the different fluctuation (cause a reef should have none!) And when you can successfully keep everything extremely consistant, THEN it would be good to try adding coral. Of course if you want a reef, then you should buy all of your livestock accordingly.
Some of the hardest things to keep consistant can sometimes be the simplest of things... For me it was temperature... I couldn't keep it steady forever. Now with the perfect calculations of MH heat w/ room temp. w/ heater setting (at night) factored in with the tilt of the Earth's axis equivilant to the perpindicular thermal inducer's molecular capacity....
Nah, I'm kidding, go FOWLR, see how it works out for you...THEN consider adding corals.
