Reef without skimmer?

My LFS has a beautiful 30 gallon cube reef, that they have had for about 3 years. They have a large HOB fuge as the ONLY filtration...no skimmer at all. Is it really possible to run a reef without a skimmer like this?

Yup, some softies and lps like a little grunge in their water

no skimmer= what changes weekly tho. i know a few tanks being ran with no skimmer.
