Refractometer ?

I just received my refractometer in the mail this morning, read the directions and when I looked through it the measurement piece was upside down, everytime I adjusted the focusing lens the measurement piece moved around (very loose). I've never used one before and want to make sure that it is indeed broken. It never righted itself. Please advise.
Thanks

The only piece on a refractor that should be "somewhat loose" is the hinged plate on the front of the unitthat swings down on to the glass plate. The numbers inside the eyepiece should be fixed so they are in the same orientation as the glass plate on the nose of the unit. The focusing ring that rests against your eye should turn but should not be "loose". It would feellike focusing a pair of binoculars I guess. Hope this helps.

Thanks, it is definitely busted. The salinity measurement is unattached (currently upside down when looking thru the eyepiece).
