I understand what kinderson & mr x is saying This is the question..I now have a 30 gal eclips tank which is deeper than it is wide. I have a refug that holds about 3 to 4 gallons. I keep the refug half full. When the power goes off and the return stops the water level in the D.T goes down about an inch witch bring the water level in the refug up to 1 inch from overflowing. I want to upgrade to a 40 gal long tank and use the same refug. Now when the refug is half way up and the power goes off the refug will no doupt overflow. What can I do to prevent this from happing short of bying a larger refug???? Perhaps a 5 gal sump?? If so how would I go about adding that to the refug???

you could limit the amount of water that comes out of the dt to the sump by raising the return, and the overflow wall. less water would leave the display in the event of a power outtage.

the tank that I want to use is drilled and has a internal overflow box and a standpipe and there is no way to move it up or down, any suggestions?

then if you must use the 3 or 4 gallon container, you'll have to drill it and extend it with another tank to give it more volume.
why do you feel you don't want to get rid of the small sump?

Mr x I have spent a lot of money on this 45 gal made a canopy and bought a used 4 bulb t5 fixture really want to get it going and transfer all from one tank to the 45 sort of ran out of money at this point so I was wondering what I could do in the meantime. Eventualy I will spring for a larger refug.
