I know this question has been asked plenty of time but I,m having trouble finding a thread with the exact answers. But i was wondering what would be the best substrate for my refugium? I was going to use 1/2 live sand 1/2 regular sand found at lfs, but after reading a few threads I read ideas of mud, or southgate not quit sure what that is. Please help give me some insight. Thank you:help:

Theres several types of substrate you can use. It really comes down to personal preference.
The mud you're refering to is probally "Mineral Mud". Its effectiveness is debated.
Sand mixed with live sand is a pretty much the standard. The live sand, with time, will spread out and turn the whole sandbed into a thriving live sand bed. Plus it saves money by not having to purchase all live sand.
Southdown is an aragonite sand that is available at Home Depot under the name south down, tropical playsand, and a few others. Its incredibly cheap in 50lbs. bags vs. paying for aragonite sand at a fish store.
