Hi, Im new to this site... duh, however Im not new to the reef keeping world... Now for my question :)
I have resently bought a 14 gallon rubbermade tub which I will use to make a refuge out of... Now I have a question about if I can use 100% silicone for the overflow PVC (1'') pipe? I have the idea up in my head.. however I was worried about the silicone being toxic? it is just normal... well Ill type what it says on the tube....
here you go
Ok its from ACE Hardware
um... it says 100%silicone
on the warning it says Product releases acetic acid during application and curing...
the ingredients are Silica, Ethyl triacetoxysilane as acetic acid, silicone fluid and dibutyltin dilurate... Im worried that this is a bad product....
If you think it is what is something I can use to glue these PVC pipes for the overflow of the refuge together???
thanks a bunch... BTW has anyone ordered off this site.. we will be making an order this thursday.. do they ship on fridays???
thanks again!!!

I'd find something that says aquarium safe just to be "safe". You could hit petsmart or ***** and compair the ingredients of their aquarium silicone to what you've got. Some of the silicone has anti fungus chemicals in it that are bad for the critters.

Yeah thats what Im worried about... this says it can be used in and around the home, and its mildew resistant... so Im pretty sure that this is BAD STUFF huh?

Yes I just took all the silicon off the pipes that I had siliconed it for use... so Im going to go to walmart and pic up a tube of it so I KNOW IT WILL BE SAFE!!
thanks for your help everyone... we really solved this matter QUICK!!!
BTW: has anyone ordered from SWF.com? We are this thursday and Im just wondering if it is as good as it says it is.. and if I would get a shipment on Friday if I ordered Thursday?

I have used silicone from Hardware stores without a prob. Just make sure it says 100% clear silicone and you will be fine. I have used it to make numerous sumps with out a prob. If you read on the tube of "Aquarium Sealent" it says 100% silicone. It just cost more. I buy the stuff by the caulking gun size.

yes I did have that, but it has the Prevents Mildew lable on it and that means its got some bad chems in it... so I WONT be using that stuff... Ill just be on the 100% clear SAFE SIDE and buy the silicone used specifically for Aquariums LOL
thanks though!

You don't need to buy the "all glass" silicone. Do a search on the board and it will point you to cheaper alternatives. I believe "aqua goop" is one of them. Don't get any mildew resistant stuff.
