Just wanted to say that having a refugium is so extremely important. I have a 150gal that is a little overstocked and I've been trying very hard to keep my nitrates below 40 with water changes, good skimmer and limited feedings. So after getting tired of all the water changes, I bought a whole lot of algae for my sump/refugium. I bought chaeto which has now grown so big I'm having to give some away, plus this other algae... don't know the name but it looks like seaweed, a lot of it! Plus I added a 6" sandbed to my refugium.
Wow! What a difference this makes. For the past 2 weeks, I've been running the tank without a skimmer and slowly my nitrates have been reduced to ZERO and this is with no skimmer. I don't even have to scrape algae off the tank walls anymore. Never realized the importance of a good refugium until now.
