Refugium, a must have!

Just wanted to say that having a refugium is so extremely important. I have a 150gal that is a little overstocked and I've been trying very hard to keep my nitrates below 40 with water changes, good skimmer and limited feedings. So after getting tired of all the water changes, I bought a whole lot of algae for my sump/refugium. I bought chaeto which has now grown so big I'm having to give some away, plus this other algae... don't know the name but it looks like seaweed, a lot of it! Plus I added a 6" sandbed to my refugium.
Wow! What a difference this makes. For the past 2 weeks, I've been running the tank without a skimmer and slowly my nitrates have been reduced to ZERO and this is with no skimmer. I don't even have to scrape algae off the tank walls anymore. Never realized the importance of a good refugium until now.

They sell HOB Refugiums that come with everything you need. Definitely worth it. I can't post a link here but go to some of the online stores and do a search for it.

I have my refugium in the sump. But the HOB ones are long plastic containers that you hang on the back of your tank. It comes with a pump that circulates the water from your tank, through the refugium and back in the tank. You have to buy a light for it too. It works sort of like a HOB filter, no drilling or any plumbing for you to do.

Not sure how I can tell you where to buy them, since we're not allowed to post any links here. They cost anywhere from $140 to $180 depending on the size (small, medium and large). Do a search for hang on back refugium. These are called CPR Aquafuge.

Hey R, yea refugium's are the best. Thanks to you guys, I got one last year. I was wondering, you say you have a 6 in sandbed in the refugium, is it sand, or mud-? Thanks

It's sand. Part is aragonite and part is live sand from SWF.com
