Refugium, Canister Filter or both?

I have a refugium and a canister filter running in my tank. The canister filter is a Fluval FX5. My tank size is 92 gallon corner design. Do I need to run the canister filter or will the Refugium clean the water fine in a tank this size? The filter I have found is kind of a pain in the butt. I can clean the thing out and with in a day it will reset it self and shoot waste through out the tank. I dread to see what my nitrates spike too when this happens. It does look just nasty. Eventually Id like to get a sump. Also I have a protein skimmer running on the tank.

One thing I have learned on this site more so on this subject you will get so many mixed views. Me myself I run both a sump and a canister fluval 305 but all I use the canister for is to run carbon & phosguard and I change them out biweekly...And this is on a 75gal. mixed reef tank.

Yep, your going to get mixed reviews. I run a canister, and while I am unfamiliar with the exact specs of yours most canisters work great if maintained properly. I have yet to have a problem with nitrates, even with a heavy bioload.

canister filters eventually become nitrate factories if not taken care of. I well setup refugium with a good protein skimmer will do the job...
I have a 105 gallon refugium where the water first flows through some chaeto with 2 different layers of Agranite, it then flows into the protein skimmer then into 2 connected fluidized carbon chambers then through live rock and more cheato, finally pumped back into the tank.
I am running Zeovit, that is why for the 2 carbon chambers
