Refugium Questions

Ok so I have been looking around on some sites and have a question about something i read. The LFS told me to run a filter to get rid of some junk in the tank but I read somewhere today that you shouldn't run filters at all because that stops copods from moving through the tanks. Any Suggestions on filters or not?
The fuge i have looks like this.(Looks better normally than this pic. also is larger than appears here.)

What kind of "junk" is in the tank?
Running carbon will make the water crystal clear, put it in a mesh bag or ladies nylon and place in a high water flow. canister filters work good for using media to help keep the tank nice. It also provides a spray bar for surface agitation which is good...it also creates more work since it must be cleaned all the time, I say 2 weeks some say 1.

Running a skimmer will also help pull extra nutrients and pollutants from the tank you can’t even test for. So depending on the “JUNK” will determine how to deal with it if anything.

I hadnt even thought about it being wrong till now and i guess im not sure what "Junk" they were talking about either. They told me that when i was just starting the hobby 6 years ago and i never questioned it cause i was new to it all (still new to alot of things).
So take the filter out of there and the overflow box also?

I thought you meant that there was junk floating in the tank...I didn't realize you meant stuff you had in the sump. Allot of folks run extra stuff in the sump to help with filtration. Filter socks and carbon. There is no right or wrong way. Nothing but a UV light is going to really bother the copepod population.

Your tank has been up for 6 years??? Look online and see what is new that you might take advantage of. Personally I believe in the...if it isn't broke why fix it...philosophy. If your tank has been up and going strong for 6 years, I wouldn't change a thing on your methods.
