well i was thinking about putting together a refugium but i havent got a plumbing gene in my body. after searchin on here for a while ive decided just to use a plain rubbermaid container..because thats all thats gonna fit under my stand. my question is basically what is the simplest most cost effective way to set this up? keep in mind that ive looked at the various diagrams and they all look like foreign languages to me. im just confused on how to pump the water to and from the main tank. any help would be appreciated..thanks!

There are alot of ways to accomplish this, but the simpliest way to explain it is... You need an overflow, a CPR for example. Use either flexible tubing to pipe down to your refug, I used 3/4" pvc but I didnt like it, and switched to 1" flexible tubing, home depot style.
After you run through your refug, depending on how you have it setup, you'll need to return the water. I used some acrylic pieces purchased from home depot made an overflow to a small space in the side of the refug where the water spilled over, and the pump sent it back up to the tank. I used a ball valve to adjust the flow of water returning back to the main tank. I'm not sure if this was the best idea, but it works great for me.
I used a Mag 7 pump, which is a tad noisy, but works great. If you're using a rubbermaid, it'll be a bit less noisy.... hopefully.
I plumbed up from the ball valve using flexible tubing again, into a "T" and used some of those snap together, flexible pieces that you can get online or any LFS to spread the water to 2 different locations in the tank. Wish I had my digital camera, i'd show ya.
Anyways, i'm sure you'll get many other suggestions, and hopefully some pics to go along with it.. HTH..

It took me awhile to understand what an overflow does before I saw one in action. Let me try to explain...
An overflow is actually two containers connected by a U shaped tube. One container goes in your display, the other hangs over your tank. The container in your display has grooves cut in the top of it so that water drains into it. The U tube has one end in each of the containers - and works using a siphon - it pulls water from the container in your display into the container that hangs onto your tank. The water then goes out the bottom of this container into your sump/refuge. You just have to pump the water back out of your sump/fuge into your display again. I think I have a thread in this board that has pics of my overflow - or just look at someone else's. I think using an overflow or having your tank drilled is going to be the easiest way to get water in and out of your tank.
Hope this helps, if not, ignore me completely...
