Refugium Substrate

Hi does anyone know what substrate is better to use in a refugium? I am planning to get a HOB refugium. I want to have macroalgae and mangroves in it and be able to sustain some copepods in there as well. Is mineral mud better or regular live sugar grain sand?
Thanks!

I've read on here before that the mud is basically a rip off. I have a HOB with LS,LR and cheato and I have tons of pods.

Jsut a note the mud has nothing to do with teh pods. Pods will come regardless of substrate shoot my empty bottom refrug has a ton.
