Refugium/sump-cleaner crew?

I would like to make a sump out of a 10gal tank for my 55folr. Do I need to put in any kind of cleaner crews in the sump? I am looking to add a activated sand bed with some macro alga.

Many people don't. Usually some LS, macro, and will do it. Add you might want to consider some LR or some LR rubble pieces...it will make a good home for little critters that will be a constant source of food in the main tank.
