refugium without flow?...

i have a 10 gallon tank just sitting...is it possible to set it up as a refugium but with no return water into the main tank? basically just have water, sand, rock, and chaeto sit in the 10 gallon.

It would still need flow within the tank to keep the water from becomming stagnent.
What would be the purpose of said tank?

Well you wouldnt get any of the benefits because the two tanks are not connected.
It would be like putting a protein skimmer in a five gallon bucket sitting in your front yard. If it's not connected to the system it wont do you any good.

Actually the answer is yes.
Kinda

You could just partition your display into a macro area and a fish and coral area. To form an in tank refugium.
or setup the 10g as a seperate tank that uses macros to balance out the system.
