refugium

I keep reading about refugiums. I have a 40 gal tank. Is this needed or just a little extra? Can I make one out of a old 2-1/2 gal tank I have with just some mangrove plants I see on ----?

It isn't needed, but it really helps. Having the macro algaes in the fuge really helps in reducing nitrates and the refugium also helps boost your critter population.
A two and a half gallon might be a liitle small. The bigger the better is the way to go if you can. Lots of people go for 25 to 50% of their tank in a Sump/Refugium.
