refugium???????????

a refugium is basically a place to grow macro algae. This algae will convert nitrate to nitrogenous gas which will compleate the cycle in you tank. I belive they also take phosphate out of the water.
I would say most peoples refugiums are either a tank or rubbermaid container kept under the tank. An overflow sends water from the main tank down into the refugium and a return pump will send it back up into the main tank.
there are other ways to have a refugium though, I have heard of people who just take an aquaclear 500 powerfilter, remove the media and grow the algae in there. you have to light it of course, so I'm not sure how you would do that.
Hope I gave you some idea of what a refugium is, don't be afraid to ask for more specifics though

Do a search on this site, one of the sharks posted a diagram of what his looks like. I believe it was in the DIY Discussion..
BTW how did your DSB project turn out?? Does your tank look totaly diferent?? I bought my sand, but am worried about converting. Don't want to stress/kill my fish..

Trebor,
My DSB turned out GREAT but plane to spend about 5-6 hrs doing this and YES it looks TOTALY DIFF but it looks hella nicer for shur and i made my LR look like a real reef (kinda anyway) and the fish will be stressed for a while but they'll calm down in about 1 hr after they're back in as long as you aclamate them to it and i hope you have a QT to put them in over night so the cloud in the water will clear and here;s how i did mine:
strianed the sand and got the fine sand out and put that into my tank WET not dry and then i soaked up the muddy water with a sponge then i added my LS wich is 20LBS and then i put about 1 or 2 inch of water back in then i put my rock like i wanted it and then i finished filling it up with a cup laying down in the sand and the water pumping into it then after 14hrs it was clear and i put my fish back in and that's all there is to it
but i don't know what your tank lloks like or anything so you'll have to figger out how to take it all out and go by walmart and buy 2 31 gallon storage tubs to pump the tank water into and put the LR in with it
Hope that helps
