i want to make a 40 gallon refugium for my 55 because i want to get a mandarin my ? is its just going to be a fugium do i still need to add the walls like in a sump?

you need to add baffles, so that the water flows over the part where the liverock and chaeto is, and flows out, so that nothing in the refuge can get stuck in the intake or outake pump.
here my refugium before i put anything in it, notice the baffles, and how the water flows over the middle, where the liverock and chateo are.

mandarin basically depend on pods, how much LR do u have?

right now i have about 25 lbs. how much lr do u think i can hold in a 55?

I have between 75-80 lbs in mine. I think it looks fine with that much in there, but I am positive it can hold more than 25. I would get at least 1 lb per gallon.

if i get like 70 lbs and like 50 in my refugium will i have enough to support a mandarin

i believe the standard rule is the tank needs to be established for awhile, and have at least 100lbs of live rock.
