Refugiums? Yes Or No ..benefit? Attached W/skimmer?

thinking of putting a refugium on my tank that has a PROTIEN skimmer attached. It is made by c.p.r....my tank is 90 gallon....just starting so about 130 lbs of rock and cycle is almost done. Nothing else but the rock right now. I have a eheim 2217 cannister filter, 2 powerheads to move the water....getting ready to add last of my equipment hopefully. I have ordered great lights online....etc. would like to hear other ideas on these refugiums and such...and other ideas for keeping all constant in the tank water. thanks!!
ps. do I need a surface skimmer and what is the benefit of these?

I am going to add a hang on refugium.I am looking at one by Aquafuge. Still trying to figure out if i want the one with the skimmer or get a sep skimmer.
