And a sump is a separate tank that your water from your display tank is pumped into or drained into. it usually has seperate chambers in it that each do different things. One chamber might have some biological filtration like your refugium, one chamber is usually set up to have nothing in it but the return pump to bring water back to your display tank. You can also keep things in here like your thermometers, heaters, auto top off and other things you wouldn't want to look at in your main tank.
It helps to increase the overall volume of water you are working with so it's more stable.
