removing carbon from fluval????

is this a good or bad idea? someone told me to replace it with just pure biomax. others tell me my water will smell. help

I was told to leave my carbon in my fluval, to keep the water clear....i have ceramic pieces in the top holder....carbon and PhosZorb in the middle.....and bioballs on the bottom.....everything is running fine for me so far.....
