removing median

I remember read that you should remove median in canister filter and just leave sponge..and power filter as well..
is that true?..and why?

Opinions vary on this topic.
If you run carbon or other types of media the most important fact is that you need to chang them. Some say carbon and other edia of that type strip the water of trace elements. I guess they could but I have never seen adverse affects from running carbon.
In most sponge filters need to be replaced once a month or so.
The purpose of just running the sponge is to remove floating matter and not to remove any other elements.

Carbon leaches phospates, phospates fuel algee, algee kills inverts and coral(smothered by growth and toxins). This chain of events does not happen over night. But it is why I now use a refugium style filter.
