Is the Reno Filstar XP3 a good filter? If not, let me know why and what you suggest for a 75 gallon tank and why you suggest it? Thanks

I have one on my 55g and it is quiet. After I clean it, it throws out a lot of microbubbles. That is my only complaint really.

Have the same setup, 55g and an Xp3, great flow from the exhaust and the baskets make it easy to add media. Right now I'm using the middle basket to hold Phos-Guard pellets. the XP3 Keeps the tank nice and clean and is virtually silent in operation. It's actually sized for up to 150g I think, but I don't remember exactly.
Assembly was quick and easy and the option to run either a "powerhead" or a "curtain" for the return was a great feature. Also comes with a small ball valve so you can tone-down the flow if it's too much for you.
I too don't like the micro-bubbles after a stop-start cycle from cleaning, but I don't see any way around them.

We we're looking at the Renas when we wer ein the market and heard mixed reviews about them. We ended up spending the extra cash and buying an Eheim unit. It was well worth the extra money, easy to maintain, can hold a ton of media and its dead silent. Apparently the Renas are very over rated as far as flow and we have heard of them having impeller issues as well. We run an Eheim Ecco 2234 on a temp. 16g set up. The 2234 is rated for up to 60 gallons but for your tank the 2236 is a larger filter and the Eheim Classic models are great also. We got our 2234 from ***** for $119 marked down from $159. Alot fo the big chain stores have awesome deals from time to time on products like these.

So the Eheim Classic 2217-37 is a good filter?

Its a very good filter. We have a classic that is currently not in use but the room for media inside is huge. The classics are actually rated higher then the ecco models because of their flow and the way the inlet/outlet are set up there is pretty much no chance of anything bypassing the filter. Well worth the money if you ask us. We searched and searched before buying and the Eheim filters seemed to be the highest rated. Alot say that Renas are way overrated on flow and that Fluvals tend to leak like crazy (not to mention they come with plastic hoses).
