replacing bioballs?

i have a biocube(29gl)lfs told me not to replace bioballs with live rock,can someone help me on what is better for my tank? thanks :notsure:

Live rock rubble is better than bio-balls though I think sometimes the whole bio-balls thing is blown out of proportion. Bio-balls can be a nitrate trap & could cause a problem. However if you have a pad or something above them it helps. I wouldn't jump into it unless if you see that your nitrates are a problem. Which yes sometimes its better to do things now instead of waiting for a problem, but if you test your water every week or every two you could catch on real quickly then go from there. I've got bio-balls in my tank & I'm not worried one bit untill I actually start seeing a problem.

I have never had my nitrates go above 2 in the over the year I've had my tank. Its usually at 0. I keep 2 filter pads above the the bio-balls on the drip plate and rinse them in fresh water once a week. I have a pretty heavy bio-load as well, but I do also have 1 lb of live rock per gallon. Over rated as a nitrate factory, yes I think so.

i agree with you. if you keep on top of your water quality, bioballs should not be a problem at all. i didnt want to run the risk though. i took out my bioballs in my 12 gal right away and put LR rubble instead. i havent had any nitrate problems. its really up to you
