This is the filter sock that i run in my sump in place of bio balls. I clean the sock 1ce a week depending on how dirty the tank gets, i clean it in boiling water with a little bleach, i've been running this for about 2-3 months and my water levels have been at 0.

I have no bubbles in the sump at all, i do have a wall in between the sock and the skimmer but there is no bubbles that come from the sock, yes the sock is right below the drain line from the overflow , i have 2 -1 " lines from the overflow box. you can call World of Fish @ 612-866-2026 , they said there just a bag hanger filter sock that they sell in bulk , they are made of a thick material, you could make one out of a filter material that you would buy bulk and sew one together in the form of a sock to fit ur sump, this sock i bought was about $ 10.00 very cheep to buy rather then make.

So instead of going through, let's say, a typical overflow box (with the water hitting a floss filter pad, then through bio balls) the water goes through the filter sock? Does the sock contain carbon ect? I'm very interested.

I still have a overflow box on the back of the tank, the water flows through 2- 1 " lines down to the sump then it filters through the sock , so alll the water is filtered before it reaches the skimmer, there is no carbon at all , just a fiber material, no bio balls this replaced them, i've talked to the maint team from World of Fish and they use this on all their reef tanks.

Do you have a hose connected to the sock, then that in your sump?

As the water falls from the overflow box, it falls into the sock that is hanging from the top of the sump. They work well, they just clog up fast and you have to be diligent about cleaning it or your nitrates will start to rise...

Thats exactly how mine works, it just depends how dirty the tank gets, lately it goes about almost 2 weeks before i have to clean it, but i've never had a problem with any params.

forgot to explain i got some of these little clear crystals from the lfs and they dilute the bleach after sitting in cold water for about 10 min, no bleach smell at all.

yes i do believe they do because i got them from shane , a guy that is a maint employee, not sure what they call them because he gave me some in a bag, you only need about 6 pellets in the water.

did you ever think you might be killing the bacteria when you clean it with bleach and water. that is not good considering you dont use anything else (biballs)

with the right amount of liverock bioballs are unnecessary anyway. the filter sock is used just like filter floss or a prefilter on a powerhead, etc..
i'm really curious what those crystals are called....

I'll try to find out the name of the crystals for you , i do have about 150 lbs of live rock in my 75 and also have a refugium and run a euro reef skimmer. every one has their own opinion on filters , this seems to work great since i started using it.
