I just bought a used 90g tank that has a canopy. I'm trying to decide on lighting and am wondering if I have to do a retrofit kit or if I should just a fixture that already has everything in it and just mount it in the canopy? What do people usually do? I still can't really decide between LED, MH, or T5.
Go retrofit it will let you get every thing you want.
You will just need to buy the right kits so you can put them together. There are plug and play kits they cost more but a monkey could put them in, and there are kits that need to be weired cost less yet you need some skills to put them in.
Right now LEDs just cost to much to solely light a tank. I would and do use LEDs for accent lighting. If you want to keep any High Light SPS coral you want then 250w MH will do it. If you are willing to go more of a mixed reef with a smaller number of High Light SPS corals then six T5-HO will do it. I run two Current USA blue PowerBrite LEDs as my actinic light and one 250w MH at 15k to give me the white light. I can keep all the sps I want and need to find shady spots for the lower light corals.
