Got my new recordias from flricordia ~ Awesome! Thanks Mike
Upon Arrival;

Three hours later;

Today!

Right hand ricordia is from LFS at 4X the price of Mike's ~ Ouch!

Love this one especially!

No. 4 is currently chilling till it gets attached to a little bigger piece of rubble so I can glue it into place.

You know I thought they were plastic pellets ~ didn't really pay any attention when they first got here, but went back and looked, and yes at least some of them were carbon pellets (didn't save them all).

what an interesting Idea (nice rics by the way) I wonder how much they help. I get the theory behind them. I wonder what the over all impact in water quality is in a bag with a coral shipped for a day without versus with carbon. hmmmm. now FlRic has me thinking of a test..... maybe some week when I have some extra cash to ship a couple things to somebody who is willing to do the testing....

By now you should know that an exeriment is something that I simply cannot resist ~ especially when its done in the name of this hobby! Got anything to sale (or trade)? Might be able to help out with both the cash and the testing. Course Mike may already have done this and may be able to tell us the results?

It would be great if he did and had results. that way another test would provide supportive evidence or contrary evidence pointing towards more research or leading to confirmation as a great shipping method.

Chuckles evilly as he rubs his hands together in anticipation.

I always have frags. I'm thinking it would have to be two frags of the same thing, same size etcetera, shipped in the same box, only difference being the carbon in one bag and no carbon in the other. would test some parameters before shipping (am, trite, trate, alk, cal, phos, iron, ph) I wish I had an iodine test kit because I know for a fact carbon is most efficient at removing iodine (thats actually how they test how "active" carbon is. is by measuring its iodine adsorbtion.)

We'll need to keep all testing parameters the same; so what brand of test kits are you running? I have all of the above in Hagen and several of them in API. I'm picking up a Salifert iodine test kit soon, just haven't ordered it yet. PM me a list of your current frags w/prices, or at least those you think would do well shipping to Wyoming (takes 2 to 3 days express or 3 to 4 days snailmail ~ usually)

I am using hagen/nutrafin tests (all).
as for frags I was thinking palythoa grandis one polyp in each bag (do you like grandis?) no charge for the frags as long as you promise to do the tests and post the results. I'll also handle the shipping charges. I want to frag them onto plugs so estimate about two weeks for a good heal before shipping.

My logic for using grandis is this. I know they contain palytoxin. palytoxin is very poisinous and will foul water quickly (exuded palytoxin can kill bacteria micro fauna etcetera in a small amount of water quite easily. I'll tell you the bristle worm story some day) so the thought would be using a toxic frag would raise the chances of water quality sufferring during transit showing a greater chance at different results from carbonless bag A to carbon bag B.

P. grandis is good. Sounds good. Keep me informed of shipping dates and specific test kits used and I will open and test upon arrival. Two weeks should give me time to order and receive my iodine test kit (still want to do iodine or not? ~ ordering either way, so it doesn't matter to me). I'll PM Mike just to see if he's done something similar or not as well.

Familiar with palytoxin, though thankfully I've never experienced the effects myself. You truly found something that will actually kill a bristle worm? I figured those suckers would survive anything including a nuclear bomb! Remind me to tell you my fallow tank story someday! Theory sounds good to me, experiment has a green light.

What I do with the carbon pellets is (and I only recommend using the pellets and not anything smaller-they are the Kent's pellets I believe) is soak them in a kalkwasser solution for an hour or so and give them a quick rinse in fresh saltwater.
They seem to help keep the ph elevated during shipping and absorb nasties at the same time. I only use a few per coral.

ok.. umm I dont have any kent pellets all I have is labratory grade carbon pellets. but I suppose lab grade will suffice
. I'll pick up some kalkwasser this week and do it how Mike (fl ric) does it

Spidey when did you slip in? Sorry I totally missed your post. I'm still waiting to see shots of yours were are they? Especially now that you have that great new camera. Did you get a macro with it? I'm thinking I've got to get me one, that and an external hard drive for all the pictures that are starting to gobble up my hard drive.
