Riddle Me This

Ok, I know that the rule of thumb is that you are supposed to turn over your tank between 8-10 times an hour. My question is what about teh sump? DO you include that when calculating. For instance, if you have a 125g tank you would want to get a pump around 800gph-1200gph. but what if you have a 55g sump included in that? Would you want to add that in too? Making it like 1400gph-1800gph? or does that not really matter? What do you think?

Thats a good question. I would, always better to go bigger on your filter, then if its too much you can always turn it down. If you go you small then you would get into trouble.

Does that mean... filter the water 8-10 times per hour? Or just have it moving? I have 2 powerheads and a biowheel in a 20 gal, the biowheel does 125gph, and the powerheads do 330gph combined, and I have 2" live sand and some rocks.. not alot, is that enough filtering?I want to make a 10gal sump, but I havent figured out what all I will need, what did you use in yours? How did you make it, any help would be great!

It means that your tank should be filtered 8 to 10 times an hour. What I am wondering though, is should I get a pump that will cycle teh amount in the tank or the amount of the tank plus the sump?

I always use 10x the tank amount. Since you really dont have that amount of water in your tank with all the rock ,sand or decorations 10x covers everything.
