rifle question

A good all around caliber is the 270. I have two of them, Remington and a Browning. I am sure you could get a Remington in 270 cal for well under 600. Scope will cost a little extra.

remington has a great deal rifle/scope combo for about 350. at walmart, i took a friend there last year it is a sweet gun, super light action.

I have a remington 700, in 270 cal that I have shot everything from caribou to golf balls, and am exceptionally happy with it.
I bought it from wal mart for about 275 about 8 years ago.
I have a Simmons scope (2.5-10X50mm) that goes for about $100.
I am particularly fond of the 270 because of the variety of ammunition available for it.
I handload my own cartriges, so I can load a 90 grain HP for plinking and pasture poodles, or a 150 grain for elk.
I busted my caribou with a 130 grain Nosler balistic tip at 200 yards . 3 inches below point of aim.
Not bad for a wal mart rifle.
But before you grab the check book, check out your local pawn shops. Some times you can get a good deal in there.
Also, consider going to the local shooting range. Most of us shooters are pretty good guys and will let anyone who wants to "have a turn", fire off a couple rounds. Especially if you explain that you are a new rifle shooter and are concerned about recoil and such.
My wife always laughs at me, cause I have abunch of new friends every time I go.

thanx for the tips, so what ever happen about the case in ny, also im right now thinking on weather or not to get a rifle or a shotgun first

Court is postponed until the 19th of this month...I'll let everyone know what happens.
A shotgun is very versatile, and depending on wha tyou wish to hunt, may be a great beginner gun.
I assume you are a beginner, but if I am wrong, correct me.
The only deer I killed this year fell to a wal mart 20 gauge automatic. I bought it for my son to shoot doves and squirells, but with a little buckshot, it proved itself good deer medicine.
Check out you local game laws, in NJ, you may be limited to shotgun only.

thanx, im taking my test this friday hopefully, my mom is to lazy to bring me to the dmv, i hear mixed things about rifle hunting sum ppl i ask say no hunting alllowed wit a rifle sum say its allowed, i gotta find out from my local shop, i wanted a 12 over and under but to much so ill probably get a 12 gauge semi, nj stinks our walmarts dont even sell pellet guns:nope:, also hope your trial goes ok

Good luck on your test.
At any rate, I'd recomend a 12 ga pump, or a decent auto if you can afford it. A shot gun is a lot more versatile than a rifle, but a rifle it is not.
When you decide to do any kind of shootin beyond, say, 75 yards, a rifle is the ticket. But until then, get a shotgun.
Shot gun shells are really cheap and fun to blast. I keep a shotgun and a handful of assorted shells in my car during hunting season for "emergencys"...like the wife does't expect me home for 2 more hours, so "I'm just down the street from a hunting spot"

Did you ever dive in that resivour?

we all were at one time. its cool your parents are giving you a chance at it though, I had to wait till i moved out. me with a gun was scary as a kid now me with 15 guns as an adult is even more scary. good luck. oh yea I see now that you are in natzi nj, I would suggest a shot gun, mosseberg make a decent 12 gauge for around 300 get the extended barrel 40 inch plus and sabbot slugs you can shoot around 100 to a 150 yards with a scope mounted to it. gun and scope depending on what scope you want should run your parents around 450.00.

I also have a Remington model 700 gun, .243 Win Caliber. And they are much better than just a "Wal-Mart" gun. Mine would retail for over 600 now. Bought one of the very first models for..... 300 including a 3-9 power Tasco scope. Unbelievable accuracy from this thing. Its amazing. Sighted in at 200 yards, and aim an inch high at 300 yds. This gun has killed everything from pennies to Caribou. It blasts thru telephone poles too. What you can shoot with it just depends on the type of ammo you shoot. Long range varmints and coyote and the like, use a 75 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip load. Elk and caribou - Federal Speer ammo. THE BEST. Its almost a FMJ ammo, but it mushrooms after inches of penetration.
