Rim less aquariums

Rimless tanks just look more clean.
I would not remove the trim on your 10 gallon tank. I know it has been done to death but, I wouldn't do it. Just for fun, fill up your ten gallon tank with tap water and look down the front and back pannel of glass. You will see it bow outward. The rim doesn't stop this from happening on a ten gallon tank. It does however help the stress in the corners on the seams.
If you remove it to get a more clean look, put something back to support the seams and the corners. Triangle wedges in the corners will go a long way to keep the tank together.
I removed the trim on my 20L. But I put back support.

If your tank does not come without a rim, do not remove the rim. It is there for support and believe me, the manufacturer wants to make the tank as cheap as possible...if the rim were not necessary, it would not be there.
A tank made to house reptiles, is not as strong as a tank made for fish...there is a difference. I have NEVER in 33+ years had a tank bow. The cheap comes out expensive when it comes to tanks.
There are tanks that are made without rims. If you want it rimless, purchase it rimless...They only look cleaner for a short, short time..Algae conquers all.
Also remeber that there are lots of things that hang on a tank, without a rim you can't hang anything...so be sure to consider that as well.

Flower,
Do you have a ten gallon tank made for fish handy?

Thanks for the replies. I just saw some people with tanks and they took the rim off. Dont want to jeportize the strength of it. It is an oak 10 which is alittle rare lol so it looks good either way.
I might look into a rim less but i will buy it rim less. It does look good but like you said... algae will eventually take over.

Why?
Has algae taken over on your tank now? What I mean is, you keep your veiwing pannels clean now right? What makes a rimless any different? You can clean glass at the water line, below the water line, and above the water line.

I am under the impression that Flower is saying that a ten gallon tank does not bow. A "fish" tank does indeed bow.
By the way, a kazillion is a lot. How many do you have?

I have kept fish for over 33 years..I have never had a tank bow...ever. I stand on a stool and look right down on my tanks when I service them...no bow.

There is always that little edge just above the water line...no older fish tank is going to look as clean and good as it did brand new. I would be more concerned with the fact I couldn't hang anything on it.
I think the Japanese use rimless tanks, and they look very nice, I am just saying that if you want that look, buy it that way to be safe, don't go and change a tank with a rim by removing it.

Do, any of your tanks have stock tops that would make it stand out to you? Would you like to see pictures of a ten and a 20 that in deed bow? I am not crazy, glass moves plenty before it breaks. So does steel. Ever see a picture of a passenger airplane in flight? The wings look like a smilely face. If the glass never moved, then that would be scary. Tens and twenty longs have enough pressure in them to see the flex in the glass.

That is what I am saying. Just please don't say that a "fish" tank doesn't bow.

What are we debating?
I am just trying to make sure that it is clear that glass tanks do indeed bow. At least the smaller ones. The bigger ones don't due to the fact that the glass is more thick to support the weight of the things placed in it.

I don't fly..now you know why..LOL
I have heard of tanks bowing...I know SOME do. I have not had one that did...If a tank bows it is going to break, it is the first sign of trouble..I would replace a tank if it bowed. Some tanks have even burst, I have not, by Gods good grace had that happen to me.
I longest I ever had any tank was two 30g longs, which I had for over 12 years...we finally sold them. They never bowed. My original 10g which I had even after I got married, never bowed. I had a 55g for 8 years and it never bowed, I gave that one to my dad, so I wouldn’t have to break it down and move it...I bought another 55g which I had for about 7 years, converted it to salt...it never bowed. Then I got a 75g..We sold it...two years old, it didn't bow...I now have a 90g and so far it hasn't bowed.
All those tanks, in all those years, I have never noticed a bow. Like I said, I stand right over the top and look down...if I noticed a bow it would totally freak me out. I would be buying a new tank that day, and all my fish would be in tubs until I got it up and running.
If that plastic center piece breaks all on its own...it is time for a new tank ASAP..JMO

I agree with the center piece breaking.........which is there to keep the glass from bowing. The manufacture is cutting cost by supporting the glass in the center or where ever the braces are. I asked you earlier on, do you have a ten gallon sitting around? Have you ever put a tape measure to you tanks on the edge and in the middle?
When I say a ten bows, it is like an 1/8" in the middle. So that is split between the two pannels of glass meaning that they each bow outward by 1/16". Not much. Without looking for it directly you probly wouldn't see it. On my ten I have a stock hood and it is very noticable in the hood itself.
I am not trying in any way to bash you. Please don't think that, anybody. I am just trying to be clear. I think most people have a misconception about things in general. Steel moves, Glass moves, things are engineered with saftey factors. Sometimes those limits are pushed and other times they aren't.

Hoods bow from the heat of the lights.
I have never noticed any bow..THANK GOD. Like I said I would freak out. I am not kidding.
If a tank bows enough to be seen by just looking down over the top...I would replace that tank, also if the center piece breaks..
To get out a measuring line and find 1/16th bow...something that can't be seen just to look it...this I have not done. For the sake of sleeping at night I am not going to start now...

LOL...some days I just seem to argue...I don't mean to do that either, and I don't feel bashed from you. I have a 10g under the stand for top off but it is brand new, maybe a month old.
P.S.
Okay, I just took a yard stick to my 90g...it is nice and flat and put it from top to bottom and in the center to see if it rocked at all...no bow. Now I quit.
