Rio used as submersable pump only?

Can you also use a Rio pump on a closed loop with the pump being out of the water?

NO! Actually I am really not sure but I am almost positive that you cannot do that. I know the input to the pump is not threaded for pvc. I personally would not run a RIO out of the water, all of mine are submerged. I just bought a MAG 5 for a closed loop system.

Thats a positive no. Well I guess you could but it would burn up, and you would void your warranty

My rio says right on it "do not use unless submerged"
