Can someone point me in the right direction.
I am geting a ro /di system. somewhere I saw a post about how much water people keep on hand, what I am looking for is someone with plumbing skills to help me. I have a 55 gal container (sealed) and want to turn it into a holding tank for water, want to put a valve on bottom to release the water ,top has a place for the water to enter. If anyone can help let me know.

Well, it sounds like your headed in the right direction. A couple of questions, what kind of container is it and what was in it prior to this? Then I am assuming that you want to know what kind of valve to put on it and how to install that?
Also, you say its sealed. Can you put a float valve in it?

Ok I know that barrel very well. I am the COKE MAN!
Why would you not make a lid with a hinge for your tank? I would simply cut the top and put a hinge on it. That would solve that problem. Without doing that you are going to have an issue doing any kind of valve. You would have to pump the water back out. Then you would have to find a pump that would do that, Maxi Jet.
For my storage I use the Rubber Maid trashcan in a 35 gal version with the rolling pedestal that goes with it. You could do a valve on that as well and it already has a lid that will fit tight. Just a thought.

I was thinking the coke barrels because they are sealed tight. I have 2 trash cans I can use, also where I want to put the barrel fits just 1 can.

Why do you need it to be sealed so tight? Just wondering what the thought is there. In fact you may want the trash can so you can take the lid off and clean it now and again. NO SOAP just a good scrubbin. I would also worry about any residue left in those barrels. They have a strong acid that will burn your skin when first opened. I would worry that if you didnt get that cleaned good enough you could have issues there as well.

The other problem is that the container is rigid enough that a bulkhead fitting won't be able to pull the sidewall flat to get a good seal when you tighten it.
IMO the thing to use here is a uniseal. They can be installed from the outside. Google it and you'll find what I'm talking about.
The other alternative is to put the valve on the top and turn the container upside down...

no real thought, just figured if it was sealed to keep all crap out, never thought about cleaning. that is why we use this message board so all ideas can be used. I sealed up a valuve last night with a 35 gal trash can, will check for leak when i get home from work.

I finally got the ro/ di unit set up, the question is how long will it take to make 55 gal water. the unit says 35 gpd, as I was watching it after setting up looks like it will take some time . this is my first time with anything like this. right now I have no auto shut off so i need to keep a eye on it .
