RO/DI - novice needs help

I brought in a tap water sample to my LFS and was told that the reading was 280 (whatever that means). He said I'm in the middle and suggested that I get just an RO unit instead of an RO/DI. Is this wise? Should I spend the extra money to make sure?
My setup is a 180gal.
He also told me he could get a used Chiller and Canopy (with 3MH 175Watt 10K & 2 VHO 160Watt) both in good shape for $1000. Should I trust used? Is it better to get new with warranties?
Thanks for any help.

First off Johnny what reading did he do? 280...whats that? Have him retest water and give you all the readings, PH, ammonia, calcium, phosphates, nitrates. That willl help to know your water better. It wont tell you what trace elements there are but give you a better picture of water quality. I would use the RO/DI unit anyway. Atleast you will know the quality of water when it comes out of that.
The other things is a great pricee, but should you and do you really trust this guy? After what he told you about the water I would be a little leary of him. Might be a real old unit where all the bulbs need replacing and if it works. Something to think about.

I would find out what the cost of everything is new. (Shop the web) Then you will know if you are getting a good deal. All balasts and bulbs are not the same. Find out if it is what you want.
