RO/DI Question

How long does a filter last in a standard 60 GPD RO/DI? I am trying to figure out whether to buy an RO/DI for a 72 gallon tank or start by purchasing the premade solution from my LFS. I can get the water for .90 / gallon and since I am new at this, I am unsure how long I will stick with it.
I have figured it out that before I recover (break even) on the costs for the RO/DI unit, it will have been close to 11 months (assuming a 16 gallon water change every 4 weeks). If the cartridge needs to be changed frequently (every 6 months), it would take about a year and a half before I start recovering the expense.
Suggestions/comments?
Thanks,

The RO membrane itself could last 2-3 years or more providing you always keep it wet, and don't let it to dry out.
If it drys out it done for - cooked - junk.
The other multistage filter elements need periodic maintenance/replacement too.
micron filter, carbon or the DI resin cartridge itself, these must be eventually replaced.
Kent recommendes the following;
Micron filter - change every 6 months or earlier if heavy sediments are present in your tap water.
Carbon filter element - every 3,750 gals or every 6 months.
DI cartridge - color indicated, so you change them as required.
This is for the Max60 HiS 60 gpd unit.
Manufacturers may differ slightly, but not that much, and it also depends on how much water your run through it and how often.
When doing my cost comparison, I looked at the money for buying each gallon of RO water from the store, time and convienience. Mostly convienience and feeling I've got some control of the fresh water quality.
Testing the output of the water is another good way to determine if it's working right.

Thanks for the info. I think I will wait for a few months at least, so that I can get the hang of everything else. If at that time I still think I will get a larger tank (of which is my main reason for considering it now), I will reconsider the option. Man, there is a lot more stuff to learn that I originally thought - Should have done the homework prior to jumping in - Oh well, it is fun learning and watching things happen.
Thanks again

Buy a RO/DI unit and don't waste your money on that LFS water maker with the 150 G cartreges, the water quality will be perfect too with a RO/DI
