RO/DI unit

so, I took the advice of everyone and bought an RO/DI unit. I bought second hand the BRS 75gpd value unit. I bought all new filters for it. The membrane I couldn't locally find a 75gpd one so I put an 80gpd in.

Fired it up, the bypass flush function works great. But when I close that valve, I literally get no water production. PSI into the unit is between 55-60. So. I don't think that's the issues. So I started taking things apart and noticed that the elbow coming out of the membrane filter (the bottom elbow) has a spring in it (see picture). I'm wondering if this is required? I'm assuming if I remove it I will get some sort of production.

Thanks.
