I have a Kinetico RO unit in my basement. Hooked up with a water softener. A 40 gallon upright tank holds the RO water. It is about 16"X 4 feet tall. Whole unit including installation about $900

May be a useless tidbit of info at this point, but I bought a Kent Maxxima Hi-S off this site and I love it.
That said, it doesn't have a pressure guage, RO or DI bypass or even a flush. I also had to buy my own TDS meter for $20. and a shut off would cost another $30. Just a few things I didn't think about when I was buying it.

mine is in my laundry room and just screws into the cold water tap from the washer... and drains down the washer drain... pretty simple

Kip i just wanted to know what the function of the drain was.
I've been considering getting a RO/DI unit latley and I'll tell you why.
I use tap water. My tank has been set up since 7/20/02 and I have been battleing a small algea problem for about 1 month that I beleive is getting worse. I have a Power-Glo bulb that is who knows how old the just got replaced with a Coralife 20K. I do 10% weekly water changes. Would the RO/DI help me rid the algea. My LFS told me I could get rid of it chemicaly but I would rather take a more natural aproche if possible.
TIA for everyone help

The drain is the waste water or rejection water from the RO membrane. Generally water is produced at a ratio of 1/3-4 of pure/waste water.

IMO, DO NOT try to rid it chemically. All you'll get is more problems and then the algae may just return in a couple weeks. Try to determine the source of the problem and try to fix it as naturally as possible. You may be getting blooms because of the lighting change, at least thats what I've read.

I changed the lighting in hopes of fixing the problem. The only source I can think of is the tap. I have not tested my tap for any phosphate though.

So it's for back wash?

The RO part involves passing water under pressure through a membrane. Only so much water can pass through and only a percentage of impurities can pass through with that water. What can't pass through flows out as waste water. As the water comes out the other side of the membrane it is much purer than what it went in as, the impurities that are left are then mopped up by the DI process and you get pure water at the end of the process. I think thats pretty much it, hopefully someone will be able to correct my mistakes or clarify if need be.HTH

Just in case you didn't see the other post.

Yes I agree. I purchased the water general from those guys. I got a hookup that screws on to the faucet so I could make it portable. ITs very easy. I hook one line to the faucet I run one line to the sink and one line to my 5 gallon bucket. For 78 bucks you cant beat it.

Can these units be hooked up to my kitchen sink like a Culligan or other water purifier system would be? I already have a spare tap that is currently just hooked up to cold water. My needs for RO/DI are not great, so I would like to fill up single gallon jugs one at a time.
