Not all RO/DI units are the same.
Depending on the number of stages the water passes through, and the degree that each stage removes contaminants - the outcome can be different.
Not all RO membranes are the same.
Not all canister/cartridge filter elements are the same.
If you want the best - look for a unit that is described as one that removes 99.9% of tap water contaminants, providing lab grade water.
I purchased the Kent Marine MAX60HiS.
It's a 4 stage 60 gallon per day RO/DI unit.
The waste to purified water is roughly 3:1 when brand new.
This ratio may change over time, and is only a rough estimate by the manufacturer. It all depends on what's going in contaminant wise - and this waste to good water ratio can vary greatly from tap to tap, from area to area.
This unit DOES removes silica, and can be used on either chlorinated tapwater or well water.
It's the best they offer - and I decided not to skimp on this part of the equipment wish list.
They sell this unit right here on this site under Dry Goods.
There are other brands that I'm sure will perform equally as well, but I don't own them, nor have I used them ~ so I can't really comment on any others.
I read a lot about Spectrapure, and as LOTR mentioned - some of the home buliding centers also sell nice units. Most everyone that "makes the decision and buys a particular unit" will say it's the best and works great. That's just plain old human nature.
I'm happy with my decision - and it works well for me ( see what I mean )
Providing I maintain it with regular scheduled cartridge element replacments.
This holds true for ALL units that you buy.
