Ro/di

Can anyone tell me how I can make or where I can buy RO/DI water for top offs and to mix saltwater? I have a well and I have read not to use well water in your tank. I have also been told that a tap water filter also wont get the job done. Can anyone please help?

Some sources of RO or RO/DI water:
-- LFS often have RO/DI water by the gallon
-- Those large water dispensers usually found outside/inside of grocery stores, Wa-Marts, etc. I believe most even post when the filters were last changed.
-- Your own in-home RO/DI unit. A good unit will take even very high TDS counts down to zero. Cost can range from around $100 to $200 and up. The advantage is that you will always have water, no running out (Unless you empty your resevoir container), no having to gather up a bunch of buckets and head down to the nearest outside source, and so on. These units can easily pay for themselves (Especially if you factor in things like gas, and time/effort/hassle).

So with my own RO/DI unit would I just hook it up to my faucet and let the later get filtered? How exactly do they work?

You just hook it up to a water source and turn the water source on and the system does the work....You just need to have a holding container to catch the good water.

Thanks for the info. Just one more question. I was looking at the RO units on this site and they all have a ____ number of gallons per day rating. What does this mean? Do they keep on filtering water even when they are off or something? Just a little confused. :notsure:

What your probably referring to is like 35gpd, 50gpd, and 75gpd.....That means they could depending on conditions produce that amount of water in a 24hrs of time.....If the water source is shut off to the unit it won't process anything.....

Yes that is correct.....What you also need to look at and consider alot of people go for the big daddies.....100gpd, but what they fail to realize is that once you go over 75gpd you sacrifice water quality......membranes over 75gpd usually have a lower rejection rate, where membranes 75gpd and lower have a higher rejection rate meaning better water quality.

There is an AWSOME lfs in Springfield. Its called James's Tropical Fish. They havnt had a huge selection the last couple times I have been there but on Sundays there is a guy named Tim who works there and he is great. Where in Boston is Boston Reefers? Is it anywhere near Fenway? If so I could get there no problem. (go to Sox games all the time)

Good, honest advice Acrylic51. I just bought a Typhoon III Extreme. I always used another type of cheap filter and thought I'd be o.k. The more I read and heard other peoples stories the more I decided I need better water quality. Especially if your contemplating a reef tank.

I would probably just dump the tank out (since there is nothing in it yet) and get some RO/DI water to mix salwater. Then fill the tank back up and take it from there.
