Are there any RO systems out ther that I can use without having to put them under the sink? I currently live in an apartment and don't have the freedom of reworking my plumbing.

they have the kind that you just screw onto your faucet and turn it on and it does it that way. not too sure what they are called but they do the job, may cost about 70-80 dollars i beleive.

yup, they sell those at home depot and such as well. i have a 2 chamber kind, basically the economy model, it cost around 75$. but, for it to work, you need to have a faucet that has the threads to screw a hose onto it, so you need like a utility sink or something.

If you have a cloths washer connection in the apartment, I went to the hardware store and got a hose spliter. One goes to the washer and one to my RO/DI filter. The hose spliter has a handle on it to turn each hose on and off (cost a woopen $75).

i just thought of this
if you wanted to save money i have heard that you could use those britta water filters as well, i think they are real cheap you can get them from walmart or something, but i think with the amount of water you need in order to do the correct amount of water changes, it would get dirty pretty fast, oh and im talking about those britta peices that hook up to your kitchen sink.

A Brita filter doesn't take out nearly the amount of impurities that an RO/DI unit does. Brita filters do a great job at taking chlorine out of tap water, but still leave A LOT of minerals that an RO/DI unit would remove. If there was a cheaper solution, we'd all be using it.

Home Depot sells an adapter for about $1.50 to screw into your faucet and put a garden hose on. If that is the same connection as the RO unit you guys are describing...you can pick one of the adapters up and use that.

Leave an e-mail address or look for some of the other threads for a web address on an RO/DI unit. The unit being sold comes with the self-tapping pipe connector, a hose adaptor and a faucet adaptor.

I got mine off of ----, but the company I bought it from is here:
www.airwaterice.com
It really couldn't be easier. Super easy. Just make sure to order the garden hose/ utility faucet adapter with it. I got the 5-stage filtration RO/DI system for less than $200 including shipping.
Good Luck

I got the Reefkeeper Typhoon II. Its a five stage, one particulate filter, two carbon filters, a reverse osmosis filter, and a deionizing filter. This one also hase valves to flush the RO membrane with low pressure water and bypass the DI membrane for system flushing (supposed to help membranes last longer). They have three versions, all which appear to be the same basic system set-up with some different bells and whistles.
I am very pleased with my set up.
Good Luck,
-Christine
PS - The water tastes pretty good too!

I have mine hooked up to a laundry tub in the basement with a Y connection. When I want to make water I flip the lever toward my RO/DI filter. When I'm done I flip it back to the sink spout.Couldn't be easier. They sell the Y's and hose adapters everywhere. To answer your question,No,you do not need to "hard" plumb it into a water pipe.
