RO Unit and a Well

Is anyone out there using a RO unit with a well. I am concerned about the unit's continuous use of water running my wells dry.
Can the RO unit be turned off when not in use?
Do these RO units use lots of water? Approximately how much for a unit that produces 5g per day.
Thanks.

You should test your well water making you even need to run it through the RO, there is no switch for a RO unit, if it's not hooked up then it's not on. I am not sure exactly the amount of water it uses, but if you are only puring 5 gpd, then I wouldn't worry about it. That is the smallest amount possible unless you stop it before 5 gallons.

I just started running a Kent Maxima Hi-s on city water. It makes about 30gal. of waste water to 5 gal. of product water. That is alot of waste water, but if you have a good well, that is not much water. You can install a float valve in your container to switch of when you have made the amount you need. I just turn off the water source and elevate the lines above the unit so the membrane does not dry.

Thanks for all the advice.
I am looking into the water problem to cure diatoms in a year-old tank, and I believe that a RO unit could do this.
