I want to start making my own saltwater. right now I have a 70 gallon and a 55 gallon. I am upgrading to either 125 or 180. The question is what will I need to do this, what is a recomended brand and what all devices am i going to need to do this. And how do you do it? Do you have to test your water and other stupid questions that I am trying to figure out.

I'm not in a position to recommend one brand over another, however I have the Kent Marine Maxxima RO/DI HiS. It works well and it comes with what you need other than a place to store the water. I have tested to product water to make sure. as far as mixing your own saltwater. Make it in one of your spare tanks. Get an extra heater and pump and thermometer and you are good to go. I think most people in here use Instant Ocean for their brand of choice (myself included). My process and guys correct me if i'm wrong... but I put the water in the spare tank with a heater and pump for at least a day to let it aerate. Then add salt till you are at the specific gravity you want. Then just let it aerate for another day or two ... and then it should be ready for the tank

Spectra Pure IMO is the top of the line. I was told to stay away from Kent r/o's when I purchased mine. Might have been just the opinion of those individuals that I asked. Some people on this board have bought r/o systems on e-bay that were alot cheaper than mine, but I'm nore of a name-brand type of guy. I'd rather spend more on a proven product. I also know that the people at specta pure are very helpful.

The guy on ---- that sells RO/DI units goes by 'theh2oguru', same guy mentioned above at airwaterice. I am going to buy one from him when I scrape up enough change. All I have heard about him is good things and that you can give him a call and he will help you figure out exactly what you need. He will even help you if you can't figure out how to use it (although, I hear the instructions he sends are excellent and are illustrated for even further explanation).
Hope that helps!

I 2nd airwaterice. Great product. I have read alot about filters and it really is a common filter used by all industries. There are different microns that you can get and most places give you a choice on what size.
