RO Vs. DI

Hi, I am new and have not even set up my tank yet, but I was wondering about water to use. I see that most of you use RO water from a store or vending machine. I can get that here, but I work in a lab and we have true D.I. water (deionized water) and I was wondering that since I can get that there if that would be okay to use vs. the RO water from a machine?

absolutely the purer the water that you start with the better.
the salt adds all the elements that fish need to live.

Hello, I have a question about my RO/DI unit (counter top version). I have had it a little less than 6 months. I first bought it as only a RO unit then added the DI to get the PPm down. After adding on the DI my reading went from 0.12 to 0.00 if I remember correctly. I test every so often and the other day I noticed that the PPm is now 0.01 at what reading should I start replacing either the membrane or DI filter?
Next question: What would I replace first the membrane or DI filter or both?
